Lucy Coe, Senior Associate at IP firm Mewburn Ellis takes leading role in committee for championing Women in the IP industry
LONDON: Mewburn Ellis is proud to share that Lucy Coe has been made Committee Lead for IP Inclusive’s Women in IP Group.
The mission statement for the Women in IP Community is to tackle issues that people face as women within the IP profession. It provides support and networking, not only for those already working within the UK’s IP professions but also to encourage the next generation to join the sector and climb through its ranks.
Lucy will work closely with Lead Executive Officer of IP Inclusive, Andrea Brewster OBE, and the Women in IP committee in promoting initiatives by guiding firms to improve their own equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). In 2021, this included the creation of a “Quick Wins” toolkit to help organizations make positive difference.
Lucy joined Mewburn Ellis in 2016, qualifying as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2019 and a European Patent Attorney in 2021. She works primarily in the computer software, physics, and electrical engineering sectors, and is particularly experienced in handling both offensive and defensive EPO oppositions and appeals, providing Freedom-To-Operate opinions, and advising on proceedings before the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court, the UKIPO, and the EPO.
This appointment comes alongside the recognition of Lucy as a World IP Review Diversity 2023 Trailblazer, a recognition for outstanding people with a decade or less experience in the IP industry who stood out due to their impressive practice in IP and their determination to promote inclusion and diversity within the sector. Fran Salisbury, Mewburn Ellis Women’s Champion, was also recognized as a World IP Review Diversity 2023 Shining Light.
Fran Salisbury, Partner and Women’s Champion at Mewburn Ellis commented:
“At Mewburn Ellis, we recognize the work IP Inclusive are doing to make our sector and community more inclusive, diverse, open, and fair. These values and goals are reflective of our own as a firm, so we are thrilled with the appointment of Lucy as committee lead. She will be of enormous value to the team, as she has been within Mewburn Ellis. She is an embodiment of our firm’s continued forward-looking efforts to be proud champion for change within our organization and our industry.”
Lucy Coe, Senior Associate and Patent Attorney at Mewburn Ellis, added:
“This month we celebrated Lady Carr’s appointment as the first ever Lady Chief Justice, but we were also made aware of the continuing issues and gender imbalances within the financial services sector highlighted through a parliamentary report. It is critical that we continue to initiate and champion the necessary changes needed to bring about gender parity in all respects, not least in terms of real pay and career progression. I am honored to be a part of the team driving this forward.”
