HLK is pleased to announce the appointment of Jamie Rowlands as Partner in its Legal team. Jamie, who will be based in HLK’s London office, joins the HLK team following 20 years at Gowlings WLG.

Jamie brings with him extensive experience in all areas of IP law, acting for clients on patents, trademarks (including passing off), copyright, and confidential information in the Intellectual Property and Enterprise Court (IPEC), High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and the European Patent Office. Combining in-depth technical knowledge with broad sector experience, Jamie has been involved in IP advisory work and disputes in a wide variety of sectors including consumer products, telecoms, software, medical devices, oil and gas, aviation, automotive and advanced manufacturing.

Following over four years leading his previous firm’s China office, Jamie possesses a deep understanding of the Chinese and South East Asia markets and the importance of international relationships in these markets in particular to the development and management of intellectual property. Jamie’s appointment further enhances HLK’s presence in the region since the opening of its representative office in Guangzhou PRC in 2009.

Jamie has accumulated significant experience in the conduct of SEP/FRAND litigation over recent years and will be HLK’s first solicitor litigator in the team to possess such extensive experience in this area.

Jamie is continuously recognized by directories and publications alike, and has been named as a Managing Intellectual Property Star since 2014 for patents and trademarks. He is ranked as a leading individual in the World Trademark Review 1000 and in the IAM Patent 1000. Jamie was also acknowledged as an Elite Foreign lawyer by China Business Law Journal in 2018.

The appointment of Jamie will bolster HLK’s in-house legal team which comprises a number of specialist leading IP lawyers and scientifically specialized attorneys who work in tandem with one another to provide a seamless service.

Jamie comments: “I am really excited to be joining the Legal team at HLK and to bring my areas of expertise to the firm. The combination of specialist attorneys and experienced IP lawyers offering a seamless service to clients makes HLK a truly cutting edge platform to be part of which is particularly relevant with the introduction of the UPC as well as sector specific litigation both in the UK and internationally”.

Richard Kempner, Partner and Head of the Legal team at HLK, added: “Jamie’s arrival gives us the opportunity to offer our clients a truly enhanced service – in relation to SEP/FRAND, we will be combining Jamie’s expertise with that of our attorneys who prosecute patents in the SEP arena to offer a true one-stop shop in this area, and in relation to his expertise in China, Jamie brings first hand knowledge as to how that marketplace and its legal system can be used to protect and defend our clients’ rights”.
