Dr Jochen Herr joins to lead new practice in Germany

Finnegan, one of the world’s largest IP law firms, will open a new office in Munich, Germany in January 2022. Dr Jochen Herr – a formidable IP litigator with a significant market reputation in Germany – will be joining the firm as a partner to lead its new Munich-based team. The office will open with a total of seven lawyers and legal professionals.

Jochen joins Finnegan from Baker McKenzie, where he spent nearly eight years building its German patent disputes practice. He is one of the few lawyers in Germany who are admitted both as an attorney-at-law and as a German and European patent attorney. He has more than 17 years of experience in patent litigation proceedings, and is admitted to practice before all German courts, the Federal Patent Court, and the German and European Patent Office. Jochen has represented clients in patent litigation proceedings in all major technical fields, including mechanics, electronics, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, chemistry, and biotechnology. He also has particular experience in the interface between patent law and antitrust law — for example, FRAND objection regarding standard-relevant patents, with complex international patent litigation cases as well as patent disputes before the courts of arbitration.

The Munich office represents a significant expansion of Finnegan’s European presence and is a natural next step for the firm. Munich sits as one of several key locations around the globe for patent litigation on a range of IP-related disputes in areas such as technology, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals – all areas where both Finnegan, Jochen, and the new team specifically have significant strength and experience. The new Munich office will be focused on supporting not only many major players in Germany and Europe for all their IP needs, but also Finnegan’s existing clients across the globe.

“Jochen is the perfect person to play a key role in establishing and building our German practice, given his reputation and experience,” said Anand Sharma, Finnegan’s managing partner. “His reputation as a skilled litigator and his addition enables us to significantly expand our ability to provide clients with quality advice and patent litigation support in Germany and Europe more widely.”

“It is an exciting opportunity to establish a new offering in Germany for Finnegan, which is already one of the world’s largest and most renowned IP law firms,” commented Jochen Herr. “With a new Munich-based team in place, we are well positioned to support clients in all technical areas regarding infringement proceedings at the trial and appellate level before German Courts, as well as proceedings and cancellation actions before the German PTO and the European Patent Office.”
