WASHINGTON, DC, January 22, 2024 — Finnegan is pleased to welcome Dan Roland back to the partnership. Dan returns to the firm from the US Department of Justice (DOJ), where he was a trial attorney and served as lead counsel in the Civil Division, National Courts Section, managing all aspects of cases before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Court of Federal Claims, and Court of International Trade. In this role, Dan expanded his litigation experience by handling veterans cases, contract disputes, bid protests, Fair Labor Standards Act cases, anti-dumping, and MSPB cases.
Dan began his legal career at Finnegan as a summer associate, and before shifting his practice to the public sector, he focused on mechanical and electro-mechanical technologies, covering all aspects of litigation from pre-suit investigations through trial, including conducting due diligence investigations; developing case strategies; managing discovery; taking and defending depositions; presenting oral arguments; and drafting pleadings, motions, and pre and post-trial briefing. Dan previously served as a law clerk to the Honorable Alvin A Schall at the Federal Circuit.
A former patent examiner, Dan has extensive experience before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), prosecuting patent applications and participating in post-grant proceedings.
Dan is the fifth attorney to return to Finnegan in the past year. “It is always a pleasure to welcome alumni back to the firm,” said Finnegan’s managing partner, Erika Arner. “Dan’s expanded litigation experience amplified by his time at the DOJ will be a great asset to Finnegan.”
“When you look at the rise in global IP litigation, we are excited to add Dan back into the ranks among our US, UK, and German litigators, serving our clients across all IP litigation needs,” Finnegan’s litigation section co-lead, Beth Ferrill, stated.
