Michael is in practice at 11 South Square.  He was called to the Bar in 1980, was Treasury Junior between 1991 and 1996 when he took silk.  He has appeared in many major trade mark actions including Interflora v Marks and Spencer, Starbucks HK v Sky, Victoria Plumb v Victorian Plumbing.  He has also been a mediator for 17 years.  He has an active patent practice and recently represented the government on appeal in IPCom v Vodafone, a key decision on Crown use.  He is currently working on a number of data protection class actions in this rapidly developing jurisdiction.

James Kinnaird obtained his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Glasgow University and was awarded a PhD in organic chemistry from Cambridge University. James then followed the usual path for chemists with his background and spent time in the US doing postdoctoral work at Columbia University and then as a medicinal chemist with Pfizer, before switching track to become a patent attorney in 2005. James is currently qualified to practice in Singapore and the UK, and has passed the examinations required to represent clients before the EPO.

James is a Partner in Marks & Clerk, Singapore and has particular expertise in assisting clients with the drafting and prosecution of applications in the pharmaceutical, chemical, food, life sciences and materials fields.  James has managed and implemented strategies for protecting the inventions of pharmaceutical companies worldwide and spent a year advising a proposed, new business unit of AstraZeneca on its Freedom to Operate across multiple jurisdictions and products.

James is also heavily involved in helping pharmaceutical companies defend themselves from early entry by generic competitors into the Singapore market, as well as helping pharmaceutical companies conduct due diligence on potential acquisitions.

Matt has extensive experience of acting in large scale UK patent litigation and in multi-jurisdictional patent litigation and has acted in litigation relating to a wide range of technologies, including optics, mechanical devices, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.

Before joining EIP, Matt worked as Senior Counsel for Teva Pharmaceuticals Europe. During his time at Teva, Matt managed high-profile litigation in the UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands, including Generics [UK] Ltd v Yeda & Teva, which related to the blockbuster drug Copaxone®.

Matt has a degree in Biochemistry from Bristol University and a PhD in Biochemistry (specialising in quantum enzymology) from Leicester University.

Sir Robin is a former Lord Justice of Appeal, having practiced at the International Property Bar from 1967. Between 1976 and 1981 he was the junior counsel for the Comptroller of Patents and for the government department in intellectual property. Sir Jacob was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1981. He has practiced abroad often, including in Hong King, Singapore, Europe, the USA, and Australia.

Sir Jacob was appointed to the bench in 1993 and from the outset was a designated patent judge. From 1997 to 2001 he was supervising Chancery Judge for Birmingham, Bristol, and Cardiff. He was appointed as Lord Justice of Appeal in October 2003.  He continued to sit from time to time in the Court of Appeal until April 2015. He acts as an arbitrator, mediator, and expert witness on English and European law.

Michael Bowsher QC works in public procurement law as advocate, adviser and teacher – he is a Visiting Professor at King’s College, London.  His practice covers procurement, competition and commercial issues in the health sector.

Rainer Becker is head of unit in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition, and currently dealing with antitrust enforcement in the area of pharmaceuticals and health.

Before that, he was leading the central unit in charge of coordinating the Commission’s antitrust and cartel cases and of developing competition policy in this area. Rainer previously served in different other positions within DG Competition, working in particular on the EU’s legislative initiative on private damages actions, and in operational units of the authority handling antitrust and merger matters in manufacturing and consumer goods industries.

Before joining the Commission in 2004, he was a lawyer of the Brussels and Cologne bars and a senior associate in an international law firm.
