Jeffrey Han, an attorney whose practice covers a wide range of intellectual property matters with an emphasis on patent litigation, has rejoined Vinson & Elkins as counsel in the firm’s Austin office.

Han’s experience extends to all phases of intellectual property litigation, including pre-suit investigation, fact and expert discovery, through trial, and appeal. He has represented clients before numerous federal district courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. International Trade Commission, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as well as in AAA arbitration proceedings.

Han, who rejoins V&E from Baker Botts, worked as a product development engineer for enterprise storage products at a major computer technology company before attending law school. After law school, he served as a judicial clerk to The Honorable Timothy B. Dyk of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit before joining V&E as an associate in 2011.

“Jeff’s creative and effective approach to intellectual property litigation is bred from years of experience, all starting with his time at the Federal Circuit,” said Hilary Preston, chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology Litigation practice. “He is an incredibly valuable member of our team, and we are thrilled to welcome him back home to V&E.”

Some of Han’s notable experience includes:

  • Represented major sports media companies in a patent infringement case relating to mobile streaming media applications; member of the V&E team leading the briefing and oral argument on behalf of consolidated defendant groups to obtain a dismissal at the pleadings stage and invalidity of the asserted patent based on unpatentable subject matter, which was affirmed on appeal
  • Represented a wireless technology company in patent infringement litigation involving multiple patents relating to modulation and coding of wireless broadband and cellular telephone signals
  • Represented provider of real-time data solutions for oil well monitoring and analysis in appeal by competitor of dismissal and invalidity of asserted patent; received affirmance on appeal

Han is the latest addition to V&E’s growing litigation practice, including government investigations and white collar criminal defense partners Michael Ward and Palmina Fava, shareholder litigation and enforcement partner Chris Duffy, and international arbitration partner Camilo Cardozo and counsel Jose Sanchez.

“Returning to V&E during a period of impressive growth for the firm’s litigation practice is particularly exciting,” said Han. “I am looking forward to reuniting with this immensely talented group of lawyers.

Combining technical knowledge and deep litigation experience, V&E’s intellectual property team handles all types of IP cases in district courts across the country and before the Federal Circuit involving patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and unfair competition, and trade dress.
