Washington, DC (March 18, 2025) – Axinn, Veltrop & Harkrider LLP announced today that veteran intellectual property trial lawyer Joseph Micallef has joined its Intellectual Property practice as a partner in the Washington, D.C. office.

“Joe has built a reputation over more than three decades as a trusted advocate for clients in IP disputes involving cutting-edge technologies,” said Matthew Becker, chair of Axinn’s Intellectual Property practice. “He steers cases from pre-litigation strategy through trial and appeal.”

“Joe’s depth of expertise in IP litigation and pioneering technologies makes him a stellar addition to our team,” said Axinn’s managing partner Jeny Maier. “Bringing him on board further positions Axinn as a leading firm for clients in the tech sector.”

Micallef joins Axinn from Sidley Austin LLP, where he navigated complex litigation involving artificial intelligence, 3D memory, cellular technology, reconfigurable computing systems, computer microarchitectures, operating systems, search engines, semiconductor fabrication techniques, satellite television, and solar cell design. His work includes representing clients on intellectual property enforcement and defense strategies, such as investigating potential infringement and asserting IP rights in courts across the country. Additionally, he defends against the assertion of IP rights by others. He has litigated cases before federal district and appellate courts, federal agencies, and arbitration panels.

“I’m thrilled to join a firm known for helping dynamic companies grow and thrive,” added Micallef. “I’m looking forward to leading Axinn’s tech patent litigation practice and post-grant procedures practice, having represented clients in those kinds of cases for over 30 years.”

Micallef has taught Trade Secret and Patent Law as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center for over 20 years. Before entering private practice, he clerked for Justice Joseph T Walsh of the Delaware Supreme Court. Micallef earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from The Catholic University of America.
