June 2, 2025 – CHICAGO – Honigman LLP announce that Joseph Mahoney and Erick Palmer joined its Chicago office as partners in the Intellectual Property (IP) Litigation Practice Group of the IP Department. Mahoney and Palmer are the seventh and eighth partners to join the firm’s Chicago Office this year and the second and third to join the growing IP Litigation team.
“Joe and Erick are both highly skilled litigators, with extensive industry experience handling complex life sciences matters,” said Jonathan O’Brien, chair of Honigman’s Intellectual Property Department. “Their combined pharmaceutical and biotech litigation experience, navigating several dozen Hatch-Waxman and biosimilar cases and asserting and defending client IP assets in court and before the USPTO, adds unmatched value to our team.”
Mahoney – a veteran life sciences practitioner – comes to Honigman with more than thirty years of patent law experience. He advises clients across the biotechnology, chemical, medical device, and pharmaceutical industry sectors. Mahoney has a record of successfully representing clients as they navigate a variety of complex patent matters, including portfolio development, litigation strategies, due diligence assessments for acquisitions and licenses, inter partes reviews, and Orange Book listings. Mahoney has acted as lead counsel in more than 30 patent and Hatch-Waxman cases before federal courts and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).
Palmer is a skilled complex life sciences trial lawyer and focuses his practice on patent disputes in federal courts and before the PTAB. His tenure encompasses experience across industries, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemicals, food sciences, nutraceuticals, and medical diagnostics and devices. Palmer has favorably handled intricate life science issues at the core of patent and trade secret disputes and inter partes review proceedings (IPRs), as well as IP considerations related to asset purchase, licensing, joint ventures, and collaboration agreements. Palmer managed a series of IPRs, some of the first in which the PTAB granted a patent owner’s motion for additional discovery.
“Joe and Erick are among a strategic group of talented and accomplished partners to join our Chicago office this year,” said Kristen Boike, Honigman’s Chicago office managing partner. “We look forward to the exceptional value they will add to our firm as well as our cohort here in Chicago.”
Mahoney earned his J.D. from Saint Louis University School of Law, cum laude, and his Pharm. D. from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Palmer earned his J.D. from Capital University Law School summa cum laude, his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, and his B.A. from the University of Kentucky.
