Cantor Colburn LLP is pleased to announce that six attorneys have been promoted within the firm to partnership, effective January 1, 2024. The new partners are Asaf Batelman, Ali Caless, Nancy Kennedy, Sung Wook Kooh, Matteo Pedini, and Kimberly Vines, Ph.D. Mr Batelman, Mr Kooh, Mr Pedini, and Dr Vines are patent attorneys, and Ms Caless and Ms Kennedy are trademark and copyright attorneys. All have been part of the firm for several years, earning the respect of their colleagues and consistently delivering excellent service to clients throughout their tenure.

Asaf Batelman’s practice focuses on patent applications. His current practice areas of focus include engineered materials, polymer synthesis and processing, and display technologies, and he also has experience in a wide range of technical areas, including semiconductor packaging and fabrication, petrochemicals, chemical and gas processing, and battery technologies. He previously served as an in-house patent attorney at a privately-held company in the greater Washington, DC area, where his work was focused on patent portfolio strategy and licensing relating to carbon nanotube technology, including conductive polymer-carbon nanotube composites. He holds a JD from the University of North Carolina School of Law and a bachelor’s in chemical engineering from Case Western Reserve University. He is admitted in Virginia and the District of Columbia, and to the US Patent and Trademark Office.
Sung Wook Kooh concentrates his practice on mechanical and electrical engineering, including computer science, software, telecommunications, display devices, medical devices, fuel cell batteries, semiconductor devices, nanotechnologies, and optical devices. As a Korean patent attorney, prior to joining the firm, Mr Kooh practiced for more than thirteen years at Samsung Electronics managing the IP prosecution team, where he oversaw patent prosecution in the United States and Korea, patent portfolio management and strategy development worldwide, patent infringement/validity analysis, licensing negotiations, patent maps, design-around, enrolling patents in standard patent pools, buying patents, and IP due diligence. In Korea, he attended the Seoul Science High School, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, earning a BS in Electrical Engineering, and Seoul National University, earning a master’s in electrical engineering. He holds a JD from the George Mason University School of Law. He is a patent attorney admitted in the US and South Korea.
Matteo Pedini’s practice focuses on the preparation and prosecution of domestic and foreign patents for electrical and computer-related technologies. He has substantial experience in the following technologies: semiconductor design and fabrication; artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies; server memory, processors, and data transfer; information access and delivery; data storage systems; aircraft power systems; automotive exhaust and powertrain systems; digital media systems; home appliances and consumer-electric machines; telecommunication systems; image forming devices; wireless communication; and electro-mechanical control systems. While attending law school, he served as an intellectual property law clerk for three years drafting domestic patent applications. Before his law career, he served as an electrical engineer for a domestic automotive supplier and assisted in the design of 42-volt electrical systems for hybrid high-voltage automobiles and heavy trucks. He also has extensive experience conducting personal interviews with examiners at the US Patent and Trademark Office concerning patent applications. He holds a JD from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from the Lawrence Technological University. He is admitted in Illinois and to the US Patent and Trademark Office.
Kimberly Vines, Ph.D. is a patent attorney with expertise in prosecuting US, foreign, and international applications in the areas of polymer and materials science; pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical formulation; agricultural chemicals and their formulation; organometallic compounds; and biotechnology. She practices all aspects of patent prosecution including non-infringement and invalidity opinions. Her doctoral thesis was directed to the design and synthesis of novel RXR-selective retinoids as breast cancer chemopreventive agents. Her post-doctoral research was directed to the synthesis of natural products such as Epothilone B and Pseudolaric Acid B as well as anti-malarial compounds. Prior to practicing law, she worked as a chemist at several companies in the greater Boston area. She holds a JD from the University of Alabama School of Law. She holds a bachelor’s in chemistry and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Alabama. She is admitted in Alabama and to the US Patent and Trademark Office.
