HOUSTON, February 14, 2025 – Brown Rudnick announced today that partners Erick Robinson and Jayne Piana have been named co-chairs of the firm’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) practice.

Robinson and Piana are seasoned patent litigators with significant experience petitioning for and defending against inter partes reviews (IPRs) before the PTAB, as well as appeals to the Federal Circuit. They joined Brown Rudnick’s Houston office in November 2024 as part of an eight-person IP Litigation group.

Brown Rudnick’s PTAB practice group includes numerous first-chair litigators with strong technical backgrounds, including many who are registered patent practitioners. The team’s expertise spans a wide range of industries and technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), augmented and virtual reality and image processing, blockchain and decentralized ledger, computer networking, e-commerce, food science, medical devices and MedTech, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, semiconductors, and software.

The team’s most recent victories in front of the PTAB include obtaining final written determinations in IPRs upholding the validity of claims of two patents being asserted against Meta Platforms and claims of three patents being asserted against Sony Interactive Entertainment. The team also recently settled a district court litigation against Google following opening statements, having previously had four IPRs denied institution.

“We are thrilled to have Erick and Jayne lead our PTAB practice,” said Ian DiBernardo, chair of Brown Rudnick’s Intellectual Property Litigation practice. “Their depth of experience with post-grant reviews and commitment to servicing clients will allow us to build on our successes. They are a tremendous asset to our clients.”

“We are honored and excited to lead Brown Rudnick’s robust PTAB practice,” Robinson said. Piana added, “We look forward to further success at the PTAB for Brown Rudnick’s clients.”
