AIPPI World Congress 2024 opened its doors in Hangzhou, China, on Saturday, 19 October. All attending were warmly welcomed, and there was general excitement for the next few days of educational sessions, member meetings, and networking.

Guoqing ZHANG, Vice Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, provided an opening speech, reading out a letter from the President of the People’s Republic of China, Jinping XI, which sent his personal congratulations for the opening of the congress.

The President’s letter stressed China’s commitment to protecting intellectual property and explained the ongoing efforts to build China up as an IP powerhouse. The President recognized China’s astounding progress in driving IP strategy forward while retaining distinct Chinese characteristics.

As the host of AIPPI World Congress 2024, the Congress brings the opportunity for China to strengthen its international connections further to develop its IP protection strategy, boosting progress. ZHANG expressed that the Congress and its preparations have provided an opportunity to expand China’s wisdom and solutions to be conducive to innovation, stating that protecting IP is protecting innovation.

China’s progress was recognized with the mention of its progression to 11th place in the WIPO Global Index; this fast development has created a solid footing for China as an innovator. China is the first country to have over four million valid patents, emphasizing the competitiveness of Chinese businesses and the requirement for strong enforcement strategies. In addition, China has joined nearly all international treaties to strengthen its global cooperation, especially given the evolving landscape of industrial transformation. It is clear to see from this rapid evolution and investment that IP is playing an important role in Chinese modernization.

Shoichi OKUYAMA, AIPPI President, invited all attendees to visit and enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the West Lake in juxtaposition to the modern and bustling city.

AIPPI World Congress 2024Daren TANG, Director General of WIPO, stressed the importance of working together to strengthen IP to encourage innovation and growth. He acknowledged the explosive growth China has experienced with leverage from the PCT system, of which China is the top user. TANG went on to express that China is pro-innovation and pro-inclusivity, including working to help SMEs grow with IP while also developing new design protection and tackling new technologies.

Changyu SHEN, Commissioner of the China National Intellectual Property Administration, welcomed the Congress to China for the first time in 120 years and expressed the Chinese Government’s heavy investment in it. SHEN reiterated China’s commitment to strictly protecting IP rights while ensuring that the structure promotes balanced innovation and prevents the abuse of rights.

The Welcoming Ceremony concluded with a mesmerizing performance of Kung Fu and traditional Chinese dancing.
