LONDON – As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, Mewburn Ellis LLP has had its near and long-term science-based emissions reductions targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). As one of only two intellectual property firms in Europe to receive this validation, Mewburn Ellis have committed to reducing scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030. As verified by the SBTI, Mewburn Ellis is the only IP firm so far in Europe to commit to reach net-zero by 2050 by reducing scope 1,2 and 3 emissions by 90%, each measured from a 2021 base year.
Committing to set science-based targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is one pillar of Mewburn Ellis’ Environmental Sustainability Strategy, shaped by scientific principals using industry leading third party accreditation to validate and guide their approach as well as assess progress and provide credibility.
Further efforts include a submission to CDP’s climate change questionnaire as part of their 2023 reporting cycle, a global environmental disclosure system that enables companies and cities to measure, disclose, manage, and share vital environmental information. Included in this submission is the Mewburn Ellis Net-Zero Transition Plan, summarising the firm’s plan to achieve net-zero and highlighting opportunities and risks on this journey.
Mewburn Ellis Sustainability Champion Eleanor Maciver comments:
“Our journey towards sustainability is not just a promise; it’s a tangible transformation that sets a benchmark for others within our industry. From reducing carbon emissions such as through sustainable travel practices, offsetting carbon emissions whilst we work to reduce them, resource management, and waste reduction as set out in our Environmental Sustainability Strategy to a significant investment into environmental charities and biodiversity projects, we are taking deliberate actions to minimise our ecological footprint while amplifying our impact across the value chain.”
“The latest climate science from IPCC shows that while it is still possible to limit global temperature rise to 1.5C, we are dangerously close to breaching that threshold. This critical intersection highlights the important relationship between innovation and environmental preservation, and the forward-looking IP firm, Mewburn Ellis is proud to be at the forefront of driving meaningful change. This is on both an operational and professional level, making sure our own business is playing it’s part, whilst working with clients that share our values on new technologies that will also help us limit global temperatures and improve sustainability.”
Mewburn Ellis’ Environmental Sustainability Strategy is further bolstered by a EcoVadis silver medal award, placing the firm in the top 25% of all rated companies worldwide and top 19% of the legal and accountancy profession worldwide.
In an effort to raise awareness about this important topic and their broader work in the ESG arena, Mewburn Ellis launches a Sustainable Communities special report in September each year. This outlines progress to date, operational efforts, and future strategies.
