WIPO and the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations launched a new online tool to help procurement agencies understand the global patent status of medicines. Dubbed Pat-INFORMED, The Patent Information Initiative allows patent holders to provide information about patents covering approved medicines in a free and open access database, which dually serves as a platform where procurement agencies can make direct enquiries to companies.

WIPO hosts the database and provides the resources for its development, while IFPMA is working with 20 leading research-based biopharmaceutical companies that are backing this initiative in order to have a consistent and coordinated approach.

Pat-INFORMED began from the industry’s efforts to add clarity to patent information about medicines, and by combining with WIPO’s globally recognized expertise in the organization and public dissemination of patent data, this could make an important contribution to the accessibility of patent information.
